Practical answer

Confirm designation, clearance, seals and mounting direction, then inspect shaft, housing, shoulders, fillets and fitting surfaces for burrs, corrosion, impact damage or dimensional error. Do not leave an unpacked bearing exposed to dust and humidity.

Apply mounting force to the ring that has the interference fit; never transmit it through the rolling elements. Large or tight-fit bearings require suitable heating, hydraulic or mechanical tools with controlled temperature and mounting travel.

On-site checks

  • Designation, clearance, seals and mounting direction
  • Shaft, housing bore, shoulders, fillets and tolerances
  • Cleanliness of the work area, tools and hands
  • Suitability of pressing, heating or hydraulic equipment

Record for enquiry or analysis

  • Measured shaft and housing dimensions
  • Heating temperature and duration
  • Final axial position or locking travel
  • Lubricant grade and initial quantity
