Practical answer

The correct initial quantity depends on bearing free space, housing free volume, speed and operating temperature. High-speed positions normally require closer control of fill ratio and enough space for excess grease to move or purge.

Use a metered tool for relubrication and record quantity and interval. Greases with different base oils, thickeners or additive systems should not be mixed without checking compatibility and cleaning requirements.

On-site checks

  • Bearing size and available housing volume
  • Speed, temperature, load and start-stop frequency
  • Condition of grease inlet and purge path
  • Base oil, thickener and viscosity of the existing grease

Record for enquiry or analysis

  • Complete grease designation
  • Quantity per service and relubrication interval
  • Temperature before and after relubrication
  • Leakage, thrown grease, discoloration or hardening
